Every single time I turn the key in my family's K1500, I can't help but wonder if the 5.7L Vortec is slowly, but surely giving up the ghost? I know they make around 255 HP or close, but eenngh. To make matters worse, I took a test drive on a new GMC Sierra with an LY6 equipped. God, 360 HP sounds like a fun bunch of horses.

Though in comes the bad news; will it fit?

How big is a 5.7 compared to a LY6?

Though I never knew these engines could be slightly had for cheap.

Since a 454 will fit under your hood, an LS-family engine would easily fit.

there was one on CL in my area with a 6.6 Duramax. Sounded great, had my interest, then I read reviews of the 6.6. Don't go that route, it's a junk engine from what I read.

The Duramax and the 6.0 Vortec are two completely different engines. The LB7 Duramax has shit injectors, but that is one generation of the Duramax. They aren't a Cummins, but they aren't as bad as post 7.3 powerstroke either.

The LY6 is perfect for turbocharging because of it's iron block...

obviously they're two separate engines but I saw a K1500 with a 6.6 in it. Pick almost any other engine but that one. The 6.0 is a great engine... Wonder if the 8.1 will fit?

As long as you maintain an LLY and up Duramax it will last a while. The Allison on the other hand... Just throwing that out there. But yeah, they came with 454's and I've seen people put 502's in them, so an 8.1 would definitely.

Just curious, why not the 'simple' method? You know the older Gen I and Gen II SBC can be built to do horsepower extremely well themselves, right? There's a reasom so many old hot rods are still driving around with 350s, although the LS has been changing that up for some time. But my point, why not a heads/cam swap for the 350 you have? Heck, make a 383 out of it! Can't cost as much as an engine swap when you factor in all the rest required to do that...

I'unno, I want something that's made in this era. I love how the LY6 felt, tbh.

Dimensionally they are the same size.

You've been mislead then. Duramaxes are great diesels. LB7 and LLY can occasionally have injector issues, but other than that, no real issues.

LSx engine swaps are becoming common in the GMT400 trucks, to the point of being able to buy ready made engine mounts and wiring harnesses. Word to the wise, a built 4.8 or 5.3 or 6.0 will be considerably cheaper, easier, and can generate more power than the LY6...again, building one ever so slightly.

yeah, newer duramaxes are fine - but google "6.6 Duramax review" or "6.6 Duramax problems" and you'll see what I saw a few months ago. Essentially, the gist I got was that the 6.6 is underperforming, unreliable, thirsty, and has a short lifespan.

Like I said, I've never had the 6.6 just passing on what owners and magazine articles said.

The one's I listed are the first two generations, starting in 99 and going all the way until the 05 model year. I'm speaking not from firsthand since I haven't owned one, but amongst a group of friends there have been about 10 bought and sold in the last few years, all of the LB7, LLY, and LBZ variety. No issues with them being unreliable, underperforming, thirsty, or shortlived. The biggest issue is if you want to build one for big power, the Allison won't hold up to much more than the stock 650 ft lbs of torque, so a built trans is a necessity.

Yea...Duramax engines are stout. Even the Allison trans is stout (if you don't try and run a ton of power through it). Lb7 engines (01-04) had injector issues but covered under warranty and by now all of them should have been replaced. LLY (04.5-05) had some overheating issues when towing massive loads. LBZ (06-07) great solid engine. I have an 07 and it is amazing. No issues what-so-ever. Anything newer than 07.5 will have emission things on it that are a hassle.
